Terminology and More |
Yarn Types |
Polypropylene
These fibers have a high work of rupture, which indicates a tough fiber. Polypropylene fibers provide greater coverage per pound than any other fiber, they are highly resistant to mechanical abuse and chemical attack.
 (LSR(PE) - Shown with fibrillation) |
Polyethylene
These fibers have a low specific gravity, extremely low moisture regain, the same tensile strength wet and dry, and are resistant to attack by mildew and insects. Known as the softer, less abrasive fibers. |
 (Monofilament (PE)) |
Nylon
These fibers exhibit excellent strength, flexibility, toughness, elasticity, abrasion resistance, wash ability, ease of drying, and resistance to attack by insects and microorganisms. Nylon is known to have greater moisture regain than polypropylene and polyethylene fibers. |

Textile Terminology Dictionary
The loss of desirable physical properties by a textile material as a result of some process or physical/chemical phenomenon (e.g. U/V degradation). |
A weight-per-unit length measure of any linear material. Officially, it is the number of unit weights of 0.05 grams per 450 meter length. |
Measured distance between stitch rows (i.e. 3/8, ½). |
Unfinished fabric (turf) just off the loom or tufting machine. |
The material, usually woven or nonwoven polypropylene or jute, into which carpet (turf) is tufted. |
Term used to describe attached polymeric back coatings such as urethane and latex foam (or woven or nonwoven fabric reinforcement) laminated to the back of the tufted carpet to enhance dimensional stability, strength, stretch resistance, and stiffness. |
A dry finishing operation in which projecting fibers are mechanically cut or trimmed from the face of the fabric. |
A type of textile weaving in which a thread is inserted on a primary base. |
Different Secondary Backings |
Urethane
- The black coating on the back of artificial turf
- Can be hole-punched for drainage
Urethane Cushion
- Foam backing created during chemical/mechanical reaction
- Standard thickness is 3mm, 5mm, 8mm
Natural Rubber Action Back
- Natural rubber latex coating with a laminated action back scrim
Unitary
- A secondary coating of high-rubber-content latex or a resin melt applied to the primary backing to increase tuft bind
Action Back
- A woven polypropylene scrim applied to the primary backing to increase tuft bind
